The Mai Tai was created in 1944 by Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron at his tiki bar in Oakland, California. Shaken for a friend visiting from Tahiti, the drink was so well received that she exclaimed “Mai Tai-Roa Aé!” meaning “Out of this world!” in Tahitian—thus giving the cocktail its name. The original recipe used aged Jamaican rum, lime juice, orgeat, and orange liqueur, but its fame led to endless tropical reinterpretations. Despite its reputation as a beachy party drink, a true Mai Tai is rich, balanced, and rum-forward, capturing the golden age of tiki culture in a single glass.
